Article: Strawberries & Cream Sandwich for Weaning - A Twist on the Viral M&S Classic

Strawberries & Cream Sandwich for Weaning - A Twist on the Viral M&S Classic

Inspired by the viral treat, we’ve reimagined the strawberries-and-cream combo in a soft, nutritious format suitable for babies from around 8-10 months.

Strawberries & Cream Sandwich for Weaning - A Twist on the Viral M&S Classic

When Marks & Spencer launched their now-famous Strawberries & Cream Sandwich, it became an overnight summer sensation - sweet, indulgent, and perfectly British. We’re still in hot pursuit of one! But if you're weaning a little one and want them to join in on the foodie fun (without all the sugar and processed extras), this baby-friendly version is just the ticket.

Inspired by the viral treat, we’ve reimagined the strawberries-and-cream combo in a soft, nutritious format suitable for babies from around 8-10 months. Think naturally sweet fruit, creamy textures, and no added sugar—all wrapped up in a soft, easy-to-eat sandwich that's perfect for little hands.

Whether you're doing baby-led weaning or spoon-feeding, this is a fun, summery way to introduce new flavours and textures. If your little one is a little younger, you could try the toppings!

There’s no recipe per se. After all, it’s a simple sandwich! Take two slices of bread and select your fave option below. We’ve offered a handful of takes to suit yours and your baby’s tastes and dietary needs.

IMPORTANT - finger sandwiches are best suited to babies aged 8-10 months and over, once they’ve demonstrated they can handle other finger foods, and have developed the pincer grip ( can hold a small object between their thumb and forefinger).

Considerations for Finger Sandwiches:

  • Bread: Choose soft, thin bread that is easily squashed between your fingers. Consider using toast for extra texture and to make it easier to hold.

  • Fillings: Opt for soft, spreadable fillings that are low in salt and sugar. Avoid large chunks of food or foods that are hard to chew or swallow.

  • Cutting: Cut sandwiches into small, manageable pieces, like strips or triangles, to make them easier for babies to pick up and eat.

  • Supervision: Always supervise babies while they are eating and ensure they are sitting upright in a highchair.

  • Gradual Introduction: Observe your baby for any signs of choking or allergic reactions.

1. Ricotta Cheese (Full-Fat, Unsalted)

  • Soft, fluffy, and naturally mild
  • High in calcium and suitable from 6 months

2. Full-Fat Greek Yoghurt

  • Creamy, mild, and high in protein
  • Choose plain, unsweetened, and full-fat
  • Can be spread or dolloped like ricotta

Note: Thinner than ricotta, so don’t overload toast, or it might drip.

3. Mashed Silken Tofu (Dairy-Free)

  • Smooth, neutral-tasting, and high in protein & iron
  • Blend or mash until creamy
  • You can add a drop of vanilla or a pinch of cinnamon for flavour

4. Coconut Yogurt** *(Dairy-Free, Vegan)*

  • Mild, creamy and baby-safe if unsweetened
  • Look for full-fat, plain versions with no added sugars or gums
  • Adds a subtle coconut flavour that pairs well with strawberries

5. Mashed Banana + Plain Yoghurt Combo

  • Naturally sweet and creamy
  • Great if baby prefers more sweetness
  • Just mix mashed ripe banana with full-fat yoghurt for a dairy-free alternative

6. Cream Cheese (Full-Fat, No Added Salt)

  • Thicker and tangier than ricotta but still spreadable
  • Use in moderation due to sodium content—check labels carefully
